LEIF provided a critical review of a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) of the new Impossible Foods plant-based sausage product against traditional pork-based sausage. Across global warming potential, water depletion, eutrophication, and land occupation impact categories, our detailed review of methods and assumptions used to estimate life cycle impacts ensured comparative assertions were accurate and system boundaries and assumptions were consistent, in alignment with the International Standards Organization 14044, and scientifically and technically valid.

The results of the study show Impossible Sausage resulting in substantially lower potential environmental impacts across the investigated impact categories compared to pork-based sausage products on average. Impossible Foods can use these results as justification for accessing green investments and environmentally conscious consumer markets.

LEIF provided an award winning analysis of Scope 3 supplier GHG impacts for Microsoft cloud storage as part of an effort to achieve a 55% reduction in emissions by 2030. Leveraging cutting-edge hybridized LCA methods, we combine detailed parameterized process LCA for hotspots with advanced environmentally-extended input output analysis that comprehensively captures impacts from the broader supply chain. We then integrate primary data from suppliers to deliver high resolution, spatially explicit, contextualized estimates of current and projected GHG emissions. We then identified critical impact hotspots to help target and prioritize in-house mitigation efforts and supplier guidance to manage upstream impacts.

Mitigation Scenario Analysis
DMI from the US Dairy Industry Association contracted LEIF to build a life cycle assessment tool to calculate regional GHG emissions from the dairy industry and simulate potential mitigation scenarios. The tool allows DMI to estimate emissions of both feed production and consumption, across 12 dairy production regions of the US. The tool allows users to examine alternative production scenarios, enabling adjustment of emission estimates over time for tracking and reporting progress towards goals, as well as examining potential mitigation pathways to achieve net neutrality, such as how changes in diet affects the downstream implications on enteric fermentation, manure methane and nitrous oxide emissions.

Building on initial LCA work of Smithfield's pork supply chain, LEIF transformed the LCA into categories consistent with the GHG Protocol's Corporate Standard to enable reporting of scope 1, and 2, and upstream scope 3 emissions. To track performance over time, LEIF developed an inventory reporting tool connected with detailed methods and scope-specific emission factors to enable Smithfield to estimate and track emissions over time. Smithfield will use the measurement and reporting system to examine the GHG performance of their owned and contracted operations against their GHG commitments to help understand how their investments are reducing emissions over time.
